Royal Ploughing Ceremony

Aujourd'hui j'ai eu la chance de pouvoir assister à la cérémonie du labour royal.

 Sa date est fixée par l'astrologue royal. C'est un événement annuel, qui avait déjà lieu à la période de Sukhothaï il y a plus de 700 ans, et fut abandonnée en 1936 avant d'être relancée en 1960 par le Roi Bhumibol.

Today I had the opportunity to attend the Royal Ploughing Ceremony.
Its date is fixed by the royal astrologer. It is an annual event which already took place in the period of Sukhothaï, more than 700 years ago and was abandoned in 1936 before being relaunched in 1960 by King Bhumibol.

Cette cérémonie honore la saison agricole à venir et par certains rituels prédit si elle sera bonne ou non.
This ceremony honors the agricultural season to come and by certain rites predict if it will be good or not.

 Le Praya Raek Na (le chef de cérémonie désigné par le roi) laboure neuf cercles concentriques, pendant le labour des quatrième, cinquième et sixième cercles, le riz est semé dans les sillons. Les trois derniers labours servent à recouvrir le riz de terre.

 Praya Raek Na (the leader of ceremony indicated by the King) ploughs nine concentric circles, during the plowing of the fourth, fifth and sixth circles, the rice is sowed in furrows. The last three plowings serve to cover the rice of earth.

Quand la cérémonie prend fin, les cultivateurs présents viennent alors ramasser de la terre mélangée aux grains de riz pour pouvoir ensuite les mélanger à leurs semences et s’assurer une bonne récolte l’année qui vient.

 When the ceremony comes to an end, the present farmers come to collect the earth mixed with grains of rice and mix with their seeds to be sure to have a good harvest in the coming year.
